Stories on Skin

Sophia Onufrik

Beauty standards are at an all-time high, setting unrealistic and unattainable expectations. Social media breeds an idea of perfection for what it means to be ‘beautiful’ and the pressure to be perfect has detrimental effects on nearly everyone’s mental health and self-esteem. Opening a stream of positive communication will encourage everyone to love the skin they’re in by creating a space where they can share these insecurities and celebrate their lived experiences.

Stories on Skin is a website that features the stories of individuals that have experienced natural skin issues. Through interactive storytelling, users can navigate the website through various categories driven by the participants of the questionnaire. Typography and color choices are a direct contrast to gendered norms we see in the branding and marketing of men's and women’s skincare today. Deviating from the clichés typically seen in the beauty industry, Stories on Skin employs a gender-neutral approach that focuses on the individual’s personal experiences. This site aims to unite people based on their differences and create an understanding that natural skin is beautiful.
